Wonder is everywhere, all the time, in the world around us.
From the clear night sky on a crisp winter’s evening right the way through the unveiling of the latest iPhone, the world is full of moments where we’re filled with wonder.
Yet, in our day to day, when we’re worried about the latest Brexit wrangling or what’s happening in the harum-scarum world of social media, it becomes incredibly easy to lose sight of the wonder around us and let the mundane slowly seep in.
That’s why this year’s TEDxTruro was so vital. A whole day dedicated to the celebration of wonder. And what a day it was. With talks touching on everything from the power of imagination, plunging into the ocean’s depths to discover new antibiotics, and understanding consciousness through psychedelics - there was something to inspire everyone.
As a proud sponsor of the event, we welcomed the opportunity to open up our minds to all the wonder on offer. Here are some of the highlights from our team:
Stafford Sumner, Founder & CEO
I was very grateful to get out of the office and spend a day, phone off, distractions suppressed, taking the time to listen to subjects I may not otherwise have considered, and to engage in conversations with like minded people.
It’s not just the usual ‘business crowd’ but a wide cross section of attendees.
I was also very proud to see so many former Jarrang employees on the organising committee – giving up their time to work so hard to put on the event.
My favourite talk was from Sacha Dench, The Human Swan – it spoke to my sense of adventure and proved that the actions of one person can have a significant impact on a global scale, often in the face of adversity. Truly ‘wonder’ful.

I was very honoured to be invited along to TEDxTruro with Jarrang. I am a big fan of TED talks and regularly watch them online so it was amazing being able to attend a talk in Cornwall.
It was a great listening to all the fascinating speakers as part of the live audience and I found this massively increased the impact of their speeches on me, making certain speeches capture my attention that I otherwise would not have considered giving my time to. An example of this was a speech given by Hugh Hastings, a Chelsea football club photographer and his experience as a photographer for the last 40 years. I'm not particularly a fan of football but his speech on how the value of a photograph has changed dramatically over the years through the development of technology and the importance of treasuring and collecting memories really left an impression on me.
Overall it was an amazing day and I left the event feeling like I'd gained an insight into subject areas that I'd never been exposed to before. I’d definitely go again!

Having spent countless hours watching TED talks on YouTube, it was a privilege to be in the company of the intellectual and inspirational speakers at TEDxTruro. Having had my beliefs questioned, and occasionally torn down by the brilliance of Ted speakers, it was a surreal experience to finally be there in person. The passion of the speakers and the broad range of subject matter made for an enthralling day that I will not soon forget.
At Jarrang, we’re proud to have been sponsors of TEDxTruro for the past three years. If you weren’t able to make it to the event, keep your eyes peeled for the videos which will be published on the TEDxTruro website in the coming weeks.
